Try these kids’ yarn crafts during the holidays

Yarn crafts can vary in complexity, making them an excellent holiday activity for children of all ranges. From simple weaving to pompoms and even macrame for those who want something more challenging, there are loads of ways to keep the kids occupied during summer with yarn crafts.

Macrame Wall Hangers

Macrame is the art of knotting yarn to create beautiful things, like wall hangings, which add a lovely boho touch to any wall. Once your child has mastered the art of macrame then the world really is their oyster. Rainbows and dream catchers are both excellent choices. Macrame can be done with a range of threads, but DK yarn is an excellent choice.

Yarn Solar System

Start by cutting out cardboard circles into appropriate sizes. Make small incisions around the outside and then just let the children wrap yarn around the circle, alternating the incisions until it is covered.

Use different colours for different planets, and even get creative with Saturn’s rings. Over the holidays you might manage all eight planets…and the sun!

Paper Plate Weaving

This is a wonderfully simple yarn craft that is ideal for younger children. Start by cutting an equal number of incisions around a paper plate, then affixing wool across opposing incisions for the loom. Kids can start weaving in and out of the loom, creating patterns as they do. This is a good project for kids with short attention spans, as they can put it down and easily pick up where they left off.

Pompom Cacti

Once your child has learnt to make yarn pom poms, there really is no stopping them. Little cacti pompoms are a great choice and make pretty presents for grandparents.

Other options include pom pom dandelions which can be affixed to a green stem and placed in a flower pot. DK yarn is ideal for pom poms because its thickness gives the pompom a fuller appearance.

These are just a few ideas for holiday yarn projects, but why not get creative and see what the kids come up with themselves?
