How care assistant jobs build empathy and confidence

Work in care as it fosters a particular set of characteristics and a particular way of being that are often extremely hard to develop elsewhere.

Listening More Carefully

You sit with your client(s) and pay great attention to what they say and what they have not said. This quickly increases your emotional awareness. By listening to your client(s) in this way, you can pick up on their distress and relief. This in turn enables you to be aware of your client’s’s distress and relief in all situations.

Reading Non-Verbal Cues

Care Work develops your ability to read people in situations. Very often clients are unable to express how they feel, therefore we learn to read their posture, their facial expressions, their restlessness. A great skill to have which can be used anywhere in life.

Staying Composed Under Pressure

This is not a surface level of composure but a deep-rooted sense of how to handle things in a Crisis situation.

Speaking Up for Clients

Advocating for a client’s wishes is very assertive. This work therefore helps people to stand up for themselves and have belief in their own views and wishes.

Reflecting on Your Progress

Supervision sessions or a brief daily work diary can help you realise the progress you have made. Structured reflection is an important part of the care workforce’s competency frameworks as experience on its own is not enough to cement learning.

The skills a person develops when they are in a care role will normally stay with them long after they have left their care work.
