The cost for a professional rebuild of a steering rack can range from £150 to £350 in labour for parts and for a remanufactured exchange unit (new core) it can range from £250 to £600 or more fitted.

How Rack Type Affects the Price

Manual steering racks are the simplest type of rack to rebuild, as they have the fewest components to strip down. This type of rack is the cheapest to have rebuilt. Hydraulic racks on the other hand are the longest to rebuild as the valve body and all of the fluid circuits have to be taken apart and thoroughly cleaned and inspected. This type of rack can take up to 10 hours or more to rebuild. Electric power-assisted racks are the most complex type of rack to rebuild. Not all garages have the necessary expertise to carry out this type of work. This type of work is likely to be the most expensive to have done.

Parts Commonly Replaced During a Rebuild

A number of seals and O-rings will be replaced as standard during the rebuild, which will add very little to the cost of the job. A worn valve body is one of the more common problems with Chrysler steering racks, and can cost anything from £50 to £120 for a replacement. On older models of Chrysler it is not uncommon for the tie-rod ends to also require replacement at the same time as the steering rack, these can cost anything from £30 to £80 per side.

Older Models and Parts Availability

Parts for models of the late 1990s and early 2000s are less readily available, and even specialists may need to order parts from overseas. Seals for example may be ordered from overseas and may take some time to arrive, however this may increase the cost of the part.

What the Warranty Is Worth

The repair should come with a minimum of a 6 month parts and labour warranty. Check the terms of any repair to ensure that you are covered in case the repair fails within a short period and also to check your consumer rights in case of any failure.
